Ozone, Nitrogen Change the Way Rising CO2 Affects Earth's Water Cycle
[20/08/2009 1:45 pm]
Through a recent modeling experiment, a team of NASA-funded researchers have found that future concentrations of carbon dioxide and ozone in the atmosphere and of nitrogen in the soil are likely to have an important but overlooked effect on the cycling of water from sky to land to waterways. Christian Loutoutin Boots The researchers concluded that models of climate change may be underestimating how much water is likely to run off the land and back into the sea as atmospheric chemistry changes. Runoff may be as much as 17 percent higher in forests of the eastern United States when models account for changes in soil nitrogen levels and atmospheric ozone exposure. “Failure to consider the effects of nitrogen limitation and ozone on photosynthesis can lead us to underestimate regional runoff,” said Benjamin Felzer, an ecosystem modeler at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. “More runoff could mean more contamination and flooding of our waterways. It could also mean fewer droughts than predicted for some areas and more water available for human consumption and farming. Either way, water jimmy choo shoes resource managers need more accurate runoff estimates to plan better for the changes.” Felzer and colleagues from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge and the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., published their findings recently in the Journal of Geophysical Research – Biogeosciences. Plants play a significant role in Earth’s water cycle, regulating the amount of water cycling through land ecosystems and how long it stays there. Plants draw in water from the atmosphere and soil, and they discharge it naturally through transpiration, the tail end of photosynthesis when water vapor and oxygen are released into the air. The amount of water that plants give jimmy choo up depends on how much carbon dioxide is present in the atmosphere. Studies have shown that despite a global drop in rainfall over land in the past 50 years, runoff has actually increased. Other studies have shown that increasing CO2 is changing how plant “pores,” or stomata, discharge water. With elevated CO2 levels, leaf pores contract and sometimes close to conserve internal water reserves. This “stomatal conductance” response increases water use efficiency and reduces the rate of transpiration. Plants that release less water also take less of it from the environment. With less water being taken up by plants, more water is available for groundwater or runs off the land surface into lakes, streams, and rivers. Along the way, it accumulates excess nutrients and pollutants before emptying into waterways, where jimmy choo sale affects the health of fish, algae, and shellfish and contaminate drinking water and beaches. Excess runoff can also contribute to flooding. Sometimes rising CO2 has the opposite effect, Felzer noted, promoting vegetation growth by increasing the rate of photosynthesis. More plant growth can lead to a thicker canopy of leaves with increased transpiration and less runoff. However, this effect has been shown to be smaller than the effect of reduced stomatal conductance. Aware of these cycles, Felzer and colleagues used theoretical models to project various future scenarios for the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and what Jimmy Choo Sandals would mean to the changing water cycle in forests east of the Mississippi River. They found that runoff would increase anywhere from 3 to 6 percent depending on location and the amount of the increase in CO2. Felzer and colleagues also examined the role of two other variables — atmospheric ozone and soil-based nitrogen — in the changing water cycle. Excess ground-level ozone harms the cells responsible for photosynthesis. Reductions in photosynthesis leads to less transpiration and cycling of water through leaves and more water added to runoff. In most boreal and temperate forests, the rate of photosynthesis is also limited by the availability of nutrients such as nitrogen in the soil. The less nitrogen in the soil, the slower their rate of photosynthesis and transpiration. “The increase in runoff is even larger when nitrogen is limited and environments are exposed to high ozone levels,” said Felzer. In fact, the christian louboutin shoes team found an additional 7 to 10 percent rise in runoff when nitrogen was limited and ozone exposure increased. “Though this study focuses on Eastern U.S. forests, we know nitrogen and ozone effects are also important in South America and Europe. One region has seen a net increase and the other a net runoff reduction,” said co-author Adam Schlosser of the Center for Global Change Science at MIT. “Our environment and quality of life depend on less uncertainty on this front.”

   Motorola posts unexpected 2Q profit
[19/08/2009 1:41 pm]
NEW christian louboutin shoes YORK (AP) -- Motorola Inc. on Thursday posted an unexpected profit for the second quarter after several quarters of losses, and said it expected things to keep improving this year. Thechristian louboutin pumps Schaumburg, Illinois-based electronics company earned $26 million, or 1 cent per share, in the three months ended July 4. That's up from $4 million, or break-even per share, a year ago. The Christian Loutoutin Bootslatest results were boosted 2 cents per share by various one-time effects, but even so, Motorola exceeded its own forecast, which called for a loss of 3 cents to 5 cents per share, excluding the cost of its restructuring initiatives. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had on average been looking for a loss of 4 cents per share. Motorola's sales fell 32 percent from a year ago to $5.5 billion from $8.1 billion a year ago. Analysts were looking for revenue of $5.6 billion for the latest quarter. "We will further improve earnings in the second half of the year," co-CEO Sanjay Jha told analysts and investors on a conference call. For the third quarter, the company now expects results in a range from a loss of 1 cent per share to a profit of 1 cent per share. Analysts had been expecting a 1-cent loss. Motorola shares rose 48 cents, or 7.3 percent, to $7.05 in premarket trading on news of the third-quarter forecast. The shares had already risen 58 percent this year, as investors have overcome the worst of their pessimism and have started to look for signs of a turnaround. Motorola's sales have been on a multiyear slide, as its cell phone division has failed to come up with a product that can match the popularity of the Razr, a stupendously popular phone in 2005. In thejimmy choo sale second quarter, Motorola shipped 14.8 million handsets, up from 14.7 million in the first quarter, but just over half of what it sold a year ago. The profit was evidence of Motorola scaling back heavily on its costs. It has laid off 8,000 employees this year. It is not the first time Motorola has appeared to be on the cusp of a turnaround: in the second quarter last year, it also posted a small surprise profit and reported shipping more phones than the first quarter. Its shared soared, only to lose more than half their value before the end of the year. Motorola's non-phone divisions, which make police radios, equipment for cable companies, and other electronic gear, continued to make up for losses in the cell phone division, though their sales have also been affected by the recession. They make up two-thirds of the company's sales.

   Hotel lights sparked UFO reports
[17/08/2009 1:58 pm]
It wasn't christian louboutin, but a UFO sighting in County Down in 1996 had aspects of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The latest declassified series of MoD reports on UFO sightings contains one from Northern Ireland. The report, from the Aeronautical Information Section, lists four sightings reported to the authorities. "UFO reports in Bangor, County Down, complaining of strange lights have been traced to laser lights on top of the Royal Hotel!!" it noted. Hotel employee Ricky Gordon remembered the drama back in in 1996. He said that, as he recalled the Coastguard, provided the answers to the authorities about what the mysterious lights in the sky were jimmy choo sale . "We had a big laser machine on the roof which sent a big light right out into the sky and there were quite a few reports about it," he said. The machine is still on top of the hotel, but is no longer in use. Mr Gordon said that the light was a powerful so perhaps the confusion it caused among people living outside the town could be understood. "You could have seen it as far away as Carrick," he said. Christian Louboutin Evening "Everybody was talking about it, but most people knew it was just from the hotel." The details are on the National Archives website, which have been released as part of a three-year project by the MoD and the National Archives to release files related to UFOs. The latest batch of documents, which cover the years 1981 to 1996, only have one Northern Ireland incident. The hotel lights were not the only simple explanation for odd sightings, dozens of reports of a brightly illuminated oval object were reported over London, caused by what was actually a Virgin airship advertising the launch of the Ford Mondeo. Jimmy Choo Sandals One series of sighting stretched from Innis in Ireland to Wales and the Westcountry in 1993. Two brights lights were observed on 31 March at 0105 GMT and, according to one report the Irish government despatched a jet to monitor the objects. The objects, thought to have been travelling at about 3,000 mph were too fast for the jets and were believed to have been the re-entry of a Soviet 2nd stage Tsyklon launch vehicle which had put a Cosmos 2238 satellite into orbit.

Controller Bantering About Dead Cat Before Crash
[16/08/2009 10:21 am]
The air traffic controller handling the small plane involved in a deadly crash with a helicopter over the Hudson River was chatting on the telephone about a dead cat at the airport and initially failed to warn the pilot of other aircraft in his path, officials say. The controller tried Christian Loutoutin Boots unsuccessfully to contact the pilot before the accident, officials said Friday, but the plane collided with a tour helicopter over the Hudson River, killing nine people. The controller handling the plane and his supervisor at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey at the time of the accident a week ago have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board said in a report that the controller, who has not been identified, cleared the single-engine Piper for takeoff at 11:48 and 30 seconds a.m. EDT, then made a telephone call. He remained on the phone, including while further instructing the plane's pilot, until the accident happened. The phone call, to an airport jimmy choo shoes contractor, was a "silly conversation" concerning a dead cat that had been removed from the airport, a retired union official said, in an account supported by transportation officials also familiar with the contents of the call. After takeoff, the plane flew southbound until the controller directed it to turn left toward the river, the report said. At 11:52 and 20 seconds, the controller instructed the plane to contact air traffic control at nearby Newark Liberty International Airport, which is part of the procedure for handing off oversight of the small plane. jimmy choo sale The pilot apparently did not contact Newark, the report said. Radar data show there were several aircraft immediately ahead of the plane, including the tour helicopter, "all of which were potential traffic conflicts for the airplane," but the Teterboro controller didn't warn the pilot, the report said. It wasn't until controllers at the Newark airport jimmy chooalerted the Teterboro controller to the potential collision that he twice tried unsuccessfully to contact the pilot, the report said. The collision occurred at 11:53 and 14 seconds. At the time the Newark controllers were alerting the Teterboro controller to the danger, they also recommended the plane turn southwest. The plane's pilot apparently overhead that and acknowledged the instruction, the report said. Video of the crash taken by a tourist sightseeing near the Statute of Liberty show the Piper changing direction seconds before its wing was clipped by the helicopter's rotors. The plane then broke apart in the air and both aircraft plunged into the Hudson.

After Early Errors, Wal-Mart Thinks Locally to Act Globally
[15/08/2009 10:45 am]
Having powered its way to the top in U.S. retailing, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has struggled to extend its dominance across the globe. But the world's largest retailer is Christian Loutoutin Boots learning in Brazil and elsewhere that the most successful ideas don't necessarily flow from its headquarters in Bentonville, Ark. That has it tailoring inventories and stores to local tastes -- and exporting ideas and products pioneered outside the U.S. Traffic-choked S?o Paulo, for instance, proved inhospitable to the kind of vast stores with which Wal-Mart dominates in American suburbs. At the same time, the local-market savvy of Brazilian retailers that Wal-Mart acquired has proved invaluable. What we have learned in the past couple of years is that one size does not fit all," says Anthony Hucker, a British retail veteran now tasked with taking winning Wal-Mart store formats and expanding jimmy choo shoes globally. Wal-Mart's challenge abroad is to cater to local tastes for native products that are not popular elsewhere, while still making the most of the global purchasing might that lets its squeeze down its costs. Finding new frontiers for expansion has become crucial for Wal-Mart. The company reported nearly flat second-quarter earnings Thursday, including a 1.2% decline in sales at U.S. stores open for at least a year. But Wal-Mart said it notched a significantly stronger performance abroad. The company estimated its foreign unit posted a 13% rise in profits for the quarter and a 11.5% increase in sales, if currency fluctuations are taken out of the equation. And though Wal-Mart's stock rose jimmy choo smartly last year, as its low prices appealed to recession-strapped shoppers, it has slid 7% in 2009 on skepticism about how well it will prosper when the economy and consumers bounce back. The big retailer has been gradually boosting its international spending in recent years, even as it reduces overall capital expenditures. It has estimated it will spend up to $5.3 billion on foreign expansion projects in the fiscal year that began Feb. 1. And that figure doesn't include its splashiest new move, the acquisition of a controlling stake in Chile's largest grocery chain, Distribucion y Servicio D&S SA. Wal-Mart's international division already includes some 3,700 stores and provides nearly a quarter of the company's $401 billion in annual sales. In all but one of the 14 foreign countries where Wal-Mart International does business, executives say, its sales are growing faster than that country's retail market. Yet Wal-Mart wants its jimmy choo sale international business to be much more. It has stepped up spending in China, has struck a retail partnership in India, is exploring possibilities in the Middle East and is planning a move into Russia soon. Though it puts the Wal-Mart name on many of its stores abroad, it also uses some 60 other names, often those of local retail chains it has acquired. In Brazil, a market Wal-Mart entered in 1995, it now is primarily building small discount stores catering to the emerging middle class, but under the name Todo Dia. In the city of Carapicuiba on the edge of S?o Paulo, a gleaming new Todo Dia in a hardscrabble neighborhood pocked with graffiti offers a decidedly Brazilian take on Wal-Mart shopping. A produce section styled after a fruit stand is piled with fresh oranges. A huge display hawks the black turtle beans and salted pork ears needed to Jimmy Choo Sandals cook a feijoada, a traditional Brazilian stew. "This format is very close to the people," says store manager Francisco Dias, who is locked in a heated price war with five neighborhood rivals, mostly mom-and-pop businesses.
